A Choppy Video or Lockup in the video does not neccesarily mean you are missing a codec. Usually in most cases, it is due to either low video quality or pc performance.

First ensure you have the latest video drivers. Choppy video may happen if you are missing these drivers.

Large videos require sufficient disk space and memory. Try closing any applications that are running to free up memory.

Ensure that you have 1GB+ of disk space for large videos such as movies and documentaries.
Online streaming video may become choppy if you are downloading many things at the same time. Wait until your downloads complete before viewing online video streams.
If your video locks up at a certain point; simply play the video again and skip the area in which it locks up.

There is software called "AVI DeFreezer" which may be capable of removing frozen portions of the video.
